Reopening Schools 2020-2021

NHCS is open under Plan C through the first grading period and will transition to Plan B  under the AA/BB model on October 12th.
Beginning on Monday, October 12 students in groups A and B will rotate in-person and remote attendance, with students in Group A attending on Monday and Tuesday and students in Group B attending on Thursday and Friday. Wednesday will be a remote learning day for all students. Group assignments will be communicated at the school level. Families who still want a full remote option will be able to participate in a 100% remote learning option.

Students with an Individualized Education Plan or IEP, and English language learner students, identified by our ESL programs as newcomers with two years or less in the US, will be invited to attend school for face to face instruction on days A and B, attending school, every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Wednesday will be a day of remote learning for all students.
Under Plan B, AA/BB schedule, there is no change to instruction for students enrolled in Virtual Academy. Families wanting to transition out of the Virtual Academy can do so at the end of the nine-week grading period for elementary and middle school students and at the end of the semester for high school students.

School Arrival Health Screening Procedures
  • What will the screening process be like?
Each child’s temperature will be taken by a touchless thermometer upon arrival to school. While students remain in the car, parents will be asked three questions about exposure, symptoms, or diagnosis of Covid 19. Staff will inform the parents that students must return home if symptoms, exposure, or diagnosis exist. The school nurse will follow up with the family of next steps in a safe return to school. Students will be escorted to their classroom by school staff starting on their first day of school.

Transportation - Student Groupings
  • Please choose the appropriate link based on your AA or BB schedule

    AA -  Monday & Tuesday
    BB - Thursday & Friday

Each school will have 2 sets of routes: AA or BB If your child goes to school all 4 days, you will need to review both routes as they may not be the same for A Section and B Section.

Building Social Distancing Features/Expectations
  • How will social distancing be accomplished?
We will teach our young ones about social distancing in school. Our furniture is configured to maintain social distancing in the classroom. Our floors are marked to have children practice lining up six feet apart while transitioning through the hall. We are using a one way traffic flow through our main hall. Students will enter in the morning through the side entrance of the school and exit through the main entrance in the afternoon.
  • How many people will be in my child’s class?
We have between 9 and 11 children attending in each NC Pre-K and kindergarten classroom each day in addition to the Teacher Assistant and Teacher who will teach them. Kindergarten will also have an art, music, or PE teacher visit them one day a week. There may be a teacher from the special education classroom who visits a regular education classroom to serve IEPs as well. These adults will not all be present at the same time, but will be in and out as scheduled.
  • Who will be required to wear a mask?

All staff and students are required to wear masks. Parents of students with documentation of a critical medical or behavioral need can reach out to the administrator to apply for a mask exception.
